Cool Green with Immediate Payback

Just watched exciting videos about a project by Danny Forster of Discovery Channel fame. He used Richlite Kitchen Counters in his new LEED project.

Richlite FSC Cost

What does Richlite Cost? Well, it all depends on what thickness you would like to use. At left is a vanity clad and topped in 1/4" Baguette by the skilled fabricators at Rust Brothers in Minneapolis -- http://www.rustbrothers.com/ .



FSC Richlite material is available in thicknesses from 1/4" all the way to 3" and pricing is a factor of thickness. Just to give a ballpark --

1/4" for wainscoting, ect ~ $12/ sf

3/4" for countertops ~ $50/ sf

1 1/4" for countertops ~ $80/ sf

This is approximate installed pricing and is subject to the complexity of your project and your local fabricator.

The strength of Richlite makes a 3/4" top very feasible in structural, span and cantilever terms. So the thickness choice is often an aesthetic one.

Another big cost factor is the durability of this FSC Certified Paper Product. Richlite will outlast other counters 2 and 3 times over! The Green-minded customer who is attracted to this appealing paper counter and it's matte appearance will enjoy Richlite like a leather coat. The longer Richlite is in place, the more it's beauty, appeal and the less it's cost due no need for replacement.

Defining Richlite -- What is it and How was it Invented?

Richlite is made in Tacoma, Washington by Rainier Plywood -- a privately owned company that has been in business since 1943. Richlite solid surface sheet products were the result of research collaboration between Rainier and Boeing Aircraft. Boeing engineers were hoping to find a material for their template shop that had greater strength than Plywood. So the joint team of engineers introduced paper soaked in phenolic resin and heat pressed until stable. The result was Richlite, a non-porous and very strong material.

The color is solid all the way through the thickness of Richlite (thicknesses available from 1/4" up to 3"). There are ten colors to choose from, each having a warm, mat appearance -- a welcome alternative to the glare of the high gloss choices abundant today.

Major Certifications of Richlite include:

1. FSC™ (Forest Stewardship Council) which means that a chain of custody is maintained from managed forests.

2. Greenguard for Children & Schools, the top safety rating test for volatile organic compounds (VOCs)

3. And the popular food-safe certification, NSF 51, for commercial food prep surfaces for both Baguette and Black Richlite

Richlite Goes Vertical

We have experienced 7 conversations in the past week about Richlite vertical applications. The project pictured involved warming up the hallways in a clinic. The resilience/durability and stable nature of this FSC certified paper based decor has come together at a perfect time in the green sustainability planning for building projects.

Vertical conversations and planning are happening around walls, soffits, door clads, backsplash, backdrop -- and on goes the list. Richlite has been used in signage, receives laser etch very well and is available in bi-color strategies for CNC reveals.
